A line of SYs waiting to go into the Paintshop - two out in the sunshine and one (just the headlight lens visible glinting in the shadows) inside the works. Anyone know what the white streaks on the tender are? What a fascinating pile of parts - cylinder castings, wheels, rerail frogs and who knows what else. Note that everything is neatly laid out though - it's not a random pile of junk (modellers take note!) |

A close view of the engineer's side of the cab of QJ 3195. I'd be interested to know the significance of the circular emblem and the characters. A 'prize crew' engine, perhaps? Stretching my little technical knowledge, I should say that those are exhaust steam injectors under the cab. Note also the canvas sun screen, the running lights and the diamond treadplate folded over the step edge. It's a long way up into a QJ cab - try doing it with loads of camera kit! When running, the cab door is closed and a trap door shut over the top of the steps. The cab is wood lined and fully enclosed from the tender, except where the coal hatch is. The gap between locomotive and tender is enclosed by a rubber bellows, and everyone on board is secured from the extreme weather encountered in these parts. |

The special train rolls over one of the many bridges in the forest. In 1992, I met two Canadians in Langxiang who were working with the Chinese to develop sustainable forestry - the initial growth here is logged out - but the development uses trucks and crawlers, not the picturesque narrow gauge railroads... |
