CDOHA, Qatar (CNN) -- Four U.S. soldiers
with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division were killed Saturday morning when
suicide bombers attacked a military checkpoint in the central Iraqi town
of Najaf, a U.S. Central Command spokesman said.
Two people dressed in civilian clothes set off the explosion at the checkpoint, which was operated by the Army's 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, said Col. Frank Thorp, a U.S. Central Command spokesman. Central Command had said earlier that five soldiers were killed in the attack. U.S. Central Command Director of Operations Maj. Gen. Victor Renuart Jr., said the attack would not change the coalition's operational strategy but added that it was still under review. "That kind of activity I think is something of a symbol of an organization that is getting a bit desperate," said Renuart. The victims' names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Central Command said. The suicide bombing was the first against U.S. and British forces since the invasion of Iraq began. There have been warnings of such attacks in Iraq. |
